What Exactly Is A Badger

The badger is an animal related to the skunk, weasel, and mink. It is broad and flat, and about two feet long when full-grown. It has coarse gray or brown fur, upon which are white stripes and other marks. The badger lives in burrows, sleeps during the day, and hunts for food at night. It feeds on small animals, insects, birds, and honey.

It is found in central and western North America, from Alaska to Mexico. The badger has powerful claws and it is one of the best of all diggers. It can dig so fast that it disappears underground very quickly when it is in danger. It can also dig smaller animals out of their burrows very easily. The European badger, found throughout Europe and Asia, looks very much like its American cousin, but is larger.

Badgers are fierce fighters. Long ago, hunters would surround the badger with dogs, which would kill it. This was called “badgering,” and we sometimes hear the word used to express “teasing.” That cruel sport is no longer practiced. Badgers are trapped for their valuable hair, which is used to make brushes. Some people consider badgers good to eat. The “Badger State” is Wisconsin.

There are eight species of badger, in three subfamilies : Melinae (badgers of Europe and Asia), Mellivorinae (the Ratel or honey badger), and Taxideinae (the American badger). In Mexico, this animal is sometimes called “tlalcoyote”. The Spanish word for badger is “tejon”, but in Mexico this word is also used to describe the coati.

Pet Animal Badger

Badgers are short-legged, heavy-set carnivores in the weasel family, Mustelidae. There are some eight species of badger, in three subfamilies Melinae (badgers of Europe and Asia), Mellivorinae (the Ratel or honey badger), and Taxideinae (the American badger). The Asiatic stink badgers of the genus Mydaus were formerly included in the Melinae and Mustelidae, but recent genetic evidence indicates that these are actually closer relatives of the skunks, now often put with them in the separate family Mephitidae.

Typical badgers include the species in the genera Meles, Arctonyx, Taxidea and Mellivora species. Their lower jaw is articulated to the upper by means of a transverse condyle firmly locked into a long cavity of the cranium, so that dislocation of the jaw is all but impossible. This enables the badger to maintain its hold with the utmost tenacity, but limits its jaw movement to hingeing open and shut, or sliding from side to side without the twisting movement possible for the jaws of most mammals.

Etymology

The word badger originally applied to the European Badger (Meles meles), but its derivation is uncertain. It possibly comes from the French word blaireau: “corn-hoarder”, or from the French word bêcheur (digger), introduced during William the Conqueror’s reign. The Oxford English Dictionary, however, states that the most likely derivation is from badge + -ard, referring to the white mark borne like a badge on its forehead.

A male badger is a boar, a female a sow and a young badger is a cub. A collective name suggested for a group of badgers is a cete, but badger colonies are more often called clans. Badger dens are called setts.

Behavior

The behavior of badgers differs by family, but all shelter underground, living in burrows called setts which may be very extensive. Some are solitary, moving from home to home, while others are known to form clans. Clan size is variable from 2 to 15. Badgers can be fierce animals and will protect themselves and their young at all costs. Badgers are capable of fighting off much larger animals such as wolves, coyotes and bears. Badgers can run or gallop at up to 25–30 kilometres per hour (16–19 mph) for short periods of time.

Badger Balm ? the Perfect Remedy for Dry Lips

Badger balm is one of the most encountered items on a woman’s purse. Even if you are more the “lipstick” type, you should always carry badger balm among your personal items, no matter what, because the strong wind, the unpredictable change of weather and the impurities can do serious damage to your lips. This is why this item is a necessary “must” that you just have to always have on you.

The lips are one of the most used “weapons of seduction” by women when trying to seduce an “exponent” of the opposite sex; that is why this specific part of the body needs extra care and attention and you always have to be careful at the brand of cosmetics that you use. An important tip for all of you, women out there, is to try as much as possible, to choose products that are exclusively made with natural ingredients and to avoid the petroleum-based ones that can have terrible effects on your skin.

The secret to having beautiful lips is trying, as much as possible, to keep them well hydrated and therefore, healthy. A badger balm does that for you. Containing well chosen ingredients, carefully selected and combined in order to obtain the perfect balm, this modern remedy for dry, lifeless lips is a tribute to the beauty of women all over the world, helping them in their daily battle with wind, sun or dust.

Do not ever underestimate this tinny cosmetics item, because it can help you more than you think. The secret to a happy state of spirit begins with a healthy skin. I don’t know if I heard that in a commercial or it just came to me, but it is as true as it can be. And your skin needs you to take care of your lips also, so if you don’t have already a badger balm, now it is the moment to go and buy it. Believe me, you will notice the difference!

Organic skin care products are a very important part of today’s cosmetics. If you have ever suffered from mercury poisoning with dental amalgams, you will not forget it easily. It is not nor a joke, not an exaggeration. And believe me: once you have experienced this not so pleasant happening, you will definitely have a keen interest in non-toxic skin care and you will try as much as possible, to use organic skin care products.

There is a difference between non-toxic skin care and organic skin care. While “non-toxic” simply means a product that is not poisonous, the definition used in dictionaries for “organic” can be defined in two distinct ways. The definition that we are interested in is the one that comes from chemistry and that explains the term “organic” as being a compound that contains a carbon atom. Since carbon can be found in anything that has ever lived, methylparabens which comes from crude oil and petrol chemicals can legally be described as an “organic preservative”.

This “organic preservative” is used in many cosmetic products, such as antiperspirants, body creams, deodorants, etc. and there is a study that has linked it to breast cancer, although the debates concerning this theory that have not lead to any result yet and, therefore, keep existing. That is why organic skin care products are definitely the right choice in skin care.
