There are good and bad points to both car painting yourself or having it done at a professional shop.

Reasons to Paint Your Own Car.

1. It’s a money saver or at least can be if you do it right of course. If you don’t take the time to learn to do it properly then it can still be an expensive endeavor.

2. it’s a great achievement to complete this task and then be able to stand back and look at the great job you have done.

3. If you are into car restoration, it is one way you can cut down your expenses.

4. Often there is preliminary work that you will have to do yourself before you get to the point of car painting itself.

Reasons To Paint Your Shop In A Car

1. Its most likely a time saver. Unless you have the extra time to spend car painting, then this will be the route you want to go. Don’ t forget there’s more to it than just putting the paint on.

2. The shop more than likely has much better car painting equipment then you would have. This means they can get a much more even finish.

3. The quality of the paint they use perhaps is better than what you are able to buy.

4. They know how to complete the necessary body work first as they have professionals on staff specifically for that job.

5. Reputable companies will stand behind their work. In other words they will give you some type of guarantee.

6. They have the commercial products to clean the car prior to car painting, which is extremely important.

7. They have the proper facilities, whereas if you do it yourself you may not be able to protect the car against the elements in case you can’t get it finished.

So as you can see there are good and bad points for both arguments. If you can improvise and create the same circumstances as for the favorable points of using a shop then you may want to consider it. Car painting is a serious undertaking. Another thing you may want to consider as well is the value of the car. If it’s a second vehicle or a fairly old one then maybe you don’t want to pay the price of having it professionally painted. In this case you would probably be further ahead to do the car painting yourself. In these circumstances small flaws in the overall work isn’t going to make that much of a difference.

The other point is if you have some experience with car painting or even other types of spray painting then you may be able to do a great job without putting it into a shop. These are all things you will need to consider. If you decide that you are going to do it yourself though it would be a good idea to read some “how to” books or watch a video on the subject.

There are two passageways or channels within the gun. One is for airflow the other for material flow. The fluid needle takes the required paint from the reservoir. As you use the trigger to control the tapered needle, it will pull it from the tip allowing more material through. Simultaneously the trigger regulates the air to allow siphoning of the material from the cup, and atomizes the paint. It is through the fast moving area that a low-pressure area materializes and uses the ambient air pressure as its catalyst to push the material from the cup. Now you can see what it is so important to keep the vent tubes clear and clean.

Some interesting and very important questions are such as these…

Qns 1: There are holes on both side of the air cap – what are they for?

These are like an air anvil and are called air horns. This is what allows you paint to flatten out so it makes a pattern. When the air meets the material it is in the impingement zone. As the air comes out of the horn the air hits directly in front of the air cap.

Qns 2: It is now becoming a regulation in many places to clean you gun in an enclosed gun washer. What’s the best way to use these?

If you have never used one before make sure you read and follow all instructions. They are designed to work in cycles of 60 seconds, so don’t leave you gun in there beyond that time period. The cleaning action is like putting your gun fully immersed into lacquer thinner. Can you imagine the shape of your gun if you leave it in too long or too often?

Condensation will form in your gun if you do not change the solvent on a regular basis. This means acids start to form and this is certainly not good for your gun. If you are cleaning, a gravity gun is sure to plug up the air inlet before putting it into the washer. You don’t want the solvent getting in here. Once done remove the gun and dry immediately with a cloth. If the packing starts to leak, you can change it.

Qns 3: My Spray gun produces a bad pattern:

Most likely, a rebuild kit won’t correct the problem. Balance the air with the material.

Some other things to remember is you have to use more that one gun for refinish materials if you are in a compliant area. Temperature ranges are important for HVLP guns if it’s the larger ones; it’s not for the smaller ones. Lubricate you gun with a 4 oz. Mineral oil.

Remember to match the fluid nozzles with the type of material you using. Using multiple guns means you don’t have to keep changing tips.

Keep your gun in top-notch shape by not dropping it or immersing it in thinned. Avoid harsh chemicals.

You must be in control of your spray gun at all times in the following areas…

a) Judging the correct distance from the gun to the object
b) Proper trigger action
c) Control of the speed at which you are working
d) The angle at which you hold the gun. This requires techniques such as heeling toeing and fanning.
e) Constantly watch what you are doing so you apply evenly. Do a perpendicular pass at a constant even speed. If you go slowly, you will apply more paint whereas if you go fast you will decrease the amount.
f) Make sure you are wetting the surface
g) Each pass must overlap the previous application by about 50%
h) Make sure you don’t double pass the same area

If you observe a problem let the paint flash and fix the problem on the second pass. There will be some flow after application but this will depend on the amount of reducer and hardener you have used. Once the paint catalyzes though whatever is showing is what will remain until you correct it.

Remember to take your time follow all the steps and you will master any weaknesses you have with your spray painting in no time with practice.

Often inexperienced individuals feel that all they need to paint their vehicles, is a few cans of automobile paint, and that’s it. It doesn’t work that way, and if it did then there would be a lot of car painters out of business.

Tools and equipment to paint your car are not a huge expense, but you do need them.

Item #1
To begin with you will need a good car wash detergent and a degreaser. The car must be perfectly clean before you start.

A variety of grits of sandpaper. Most likely there are going to be some rough spots that you will need to smooth out.

Putty and a putty knife. Almost every vehicle suffers from those nasty pits that flying stones cause. This is often one of the reasons to prompt you to paint the vehicle in the first place.

Masking tape and paper to cover the areas that you don’t want to get paint on. Don’t make the mistake of thinking that you are good enough with a spray can so you can eliminate this step. One small gust of wind is all it takes to spot the chrome with overflow paint.

Now you are getting closer to really getting down to starting. You will need the primer. How much you need depends on the amount of sanding and filling you had to do.

The paints of your choice. What colors and brands you are going to use is the decision you need to make here.

One of the most important items is the top coat. You really need to protect that beautiful paint job once you are complete.

These are some of the tools and equipment plus product you will need to do your job effectively. There are a few items that we need to talk about a little more in depth. For example, how are you going to apply your paint? You may have opted to go with the aerosol spray paints. In this case you will not require much more to apply the paint. In the case that you have decided to purchase paints that require a spray gun, then you must include this in your tools and equipment list.

Another item under tools and equipment although optional is an electric sander. If you have lots of sanding to do then really consider either renting or borrowing one of these if you do not own them. It can save you a lot of time and comfort as well.

Remember it is important that you clean all of your tools and equipment properly once you have completed the job. Many of the items are not all that cheap and you never know when your next paint job will come up.

Does your car need a new paint job, but you can’t afford to pay the professionals? Don’t feel alone many people face the exact same problem. However, there are steps you can take to paint your own vehicle and save some cash. Consider the following steps if you are considering taking this task on as a do-it-yourself project.

First of all make sure you have a space available to paint your car. Using your home garage may not be the best option when it comes to space, ventilation, and costly repairs if you mess up. When painting your car you need to be free to move in an area that is well ventilated. You also need to make sure any residual paint is not a problem if it gets so walls or floors.

Second, make sure you have the proper tools. Many manufacturers today offer special spray can tips or guns you can use to paint your car like the professionals. You will also need lots of tape, plastic, and rags for clean up. In most cases you will want to paint each area of your car individually. This means you will want to cover and tape off the areas not being painted.

The third thing to consider is time. Even the professionals can’t paint a whole car with spray paint in a day. It will likely take days if not a week to paint your car. Make sure you can do without your car for this amount of time. You won’t want to drive around with only a few panel painted. You could actually damage the finish if you drive the car before applying the final lacquer coat.

The final step is painting the car. You need to decide the exact steps you will take when completing the job. If you have no prior experience painting vehicles it might be best to purchases a step by step system. Make sure you fix any problem spots such as rust or dents before you begin painting and you may want to use a primer to insure the best results.

You can go for one or multiple coats, though thick single coat is not advisable. If you are thinking of having a second coat it should be allowed to dry overnight also be sure to thoroughly cover thing’s you don’t want the texture on or in.

If your surface has a lot of scratches and dents a less than perfectly smooth paint texture is actually desired otherwise if the paint is smooth and shiny- you’ll see every scratch and dent in the surface, so in the cases of cars with lots of scratches, it is best to mist the paint slightly by putting on lighter coats that don’t self-level so much. Don’t spray the paint on too heavy, it will be smooth & runny which means you’ll have drips on vertical surfaces.

If you done it correctly, the paint will “SELF-LEVEL”– the surface will “run together” and will look wet and create a smooth surface, which will require no or little sanding if you are going for a glassy smooth surface look.

Once you have a plan in mind to paint the car and it is prepped for painting, you need to practice your technique. Practice on a piece of cardboard or metal until you have the proper movements down. Finally, you get to enjoy the fun of painting your car like the professionals. With a little forethought and preparation, you are sure to do just fine.

It is a great money saver, but even more so if you do it yourself as opposed to having it professionally done. You can do it if you learn the basics and follow the instructions for car spray painting. It’s important though if you decide you are going to undertake this project that you are prepared to see it through till the end.

First of all, you need some supplies. These consist of:

- coverings to protect the unpainted areas and masking tape to hold these in place
- a good car wash detergent and brush as well as a wax/grease remover. The car must be
- various grits of sandpaper
- primers and paint that is urethane base for the car spray painting
- paint sprayer
- safety equipment such as masks, goggles and protective clothing
- knife and putty for fill ins.

One:
You must be sure that you wash the car thoroughly to remove all grime and debris. If you don’t then these things will be set in with your paint, giving a very discouraging look to the finished job. Follow up with a wax/grease remover so the paint you use for the car spray painting will adhere properly.

Two:
Remove any rough spots by sanding. Once this has been done be sure to rinse off any of the loose sandings. This is where you will want to use the putty to fill in any minor pit marks, that are have been caused from stones for example.

Three:
Don’t get in too much of a hurry to start your car spray painting. The car must be completely dry so it is best to leave it to do so for a few hours. You can go ahead and cover any of the areas that your do not want to get paint on.

Four:
Now you are ready to start with the primer. Don’t skip this step, as it will give a much improved look to the finished project. It helps the paint to adhere properly and allows for a more even finish. Next, once the primer is dry you will need to lightly sand it down.

Five:
You are finally at the step you have been waiting for. Its time to apply the color for your car spray painting. Whether you have chosen to use aerosol paints or a spray gun, the premise remains the same. Only apply thin coats. Several will probably be needed. Many light coats are much better than one thick coat. You will be able to tell just by looking at the car how many more coats of paint it will need. Some may only need two whereas others may need three or four.

Six:
Finally, down to the last step and that’s applying the clear coat. This is done exactly the same as the colored coats.

Now you can clean up, step back and admire the masterpiece you have created.

Some individuals may suggest to you that using aerosol spray paint to paint your car is not a wise choice. It is true that you are not likely to get that car manufacturers’ perfect finish on it, but you still can get some pleasing results. The important thing is that you buy a good quality paint, and most important you apply it properly. There are some techniques to using aerosol spray paints. They are not hard to learn and are well worth the effort.

First of all you will need to determine if you are just touching up a specific area on your car, or if you are going to repaint the entire vehicle. If you are doing a touch up then you are going to have to pay close attention to color matching, whereas in a total paint job this isn’t quite as important.

Assuming you are going to be doing a touchup you will require some items. You will need some repair items such as sandpaper, putty and a knife. If the area you are working on is rough or chipped you will need to sand it down smooth. If there are pit marks you will have to fill them with the putty then smooth this out.

You will need a good car wash detergent, and degreaser, even if you are doing just a touchup, it must be perfectly clean.

You will need some newspaper and masking tape. Take the time to be diligent about covering other areas that could possibly be in the line of fire when you are apply your aerosol spay paint. Even a very light breeze could cause a over spray onto your chrome, windows, etc.

You need to choose your primer, color and finish aerosol spray paints. Be sure to do a color test by doing a very small area first. Then you will be able to proceed.

Try a few sprays on some cardboard first to be sure you don’t get any squirts or blobs, and the paint is spraying evenly. Don’t forget to shake the can for at least two or three minutes so it is well mixed, or you won’t get an even color.

Keep the spray moving as you press down on the nozzle. Don’t hold it in one spot or you will get runs. It is much better to apply several very light coats, then one or two heavy ones. If you apply it too thick it is going to be very uneven and extremely obvious. It may seem like this is very time consuming, but not nearly as much as it will be if you have to resand the paint off and start over again.

Shake the can of aerosol spray paint every few minutes in order to keep it well distributed.

Your primer and your top coat must be applied with as much care as your color is. With the proper application of your aerosol spray paint, your car can end up very impressive looking, and all of the work you put into it will have been well worth it.

One thing is for sure if you are going to be a paint technician then how good you are at it will all depend on how well you learn to operate your spray guns. They are the tools of the trade and can mean the difference in your being an excellent paint technician or a poor one. Not only must one learn the various techniques involved with the spray guns there is also a must have knowledge to be gained in how to maintain the spray guns to keep them in their optimum working condition. You can have all the techniques mastered but if your gun is not operating properly then in won’t matter about your techniques.

You have to visualize what the spray gun is doing when in operation such as taking tiny droplets of paints then breaking these droplets down into thousands of small particles. What gives the spray gun its ability to do this is its nozzle set. This is the air cap, paint needle and the fluid tip. There are variables that determine the size of those thousands of droplets of paint. It will depend on the viscosity of the streams of fluid as well as how much surface tension is present. The reason you don’t get a steady stream of paint running out is because of the compressed air at the nozzle.

Getting on to the techniques of the gun when you slightly apply pressure to the trigger the air valve opens. With a little more pressure, it opens the fluid tip needle and allows the paint to flow.

If you are using a gravity gun. The amount of fluid dispersed is controlled by the viscosity of the paint. The flow is also determined by the fluid tip as well as the needle adjustment. As a rule of thumb, the gun should be almost fully open. With pressurized fluids, air pressure also affects the flow.

Equipment Set Up
Knowing how to work with atomization is the key to the proper set up. The combinations of the variants must be just right. For example the exact blend of the right nozzle with the correct pressure settings combined with fluid flow and fan width all the way they are suppose to be determines the outcome. Ideally, for the standard guns try and use only enough pressure to give you the best atomization and spray pattern.

If you are new to the world of spray painting the best advice in the beginning is keep it simple. In other words, use a type of spray gun that is going to do the job you need it for. There is no need to purchase a spray gun that has a lot of additives to it if you don’t require them. On the other hand, if you are going to be using your spray gun on a regular basics then you may want something a little more advanced, as you will likely need it as you venture into your paint jobs.

When painting the exterior of your home, you may want to consider renting an airless sprayer. Painting your house with an airless sprayer can save many hours of labor, produce a more consistent finish, and reduce the amount of paint needed to do the job. However, if you decide to paint with an airless sprayer you will want to follow a few rules and tips.

First, when spraying the exterior of a home, you must take extra care in the masking process. The concussion of air coming from the spray-tip is sufficient to push aside insufficiently secured paper/plastic masking. In addition, the spray of the gun-tip may push well beyond the main stream of paint, thus coating unprotected areas adjacent to the targeted area. For best results, mask completely everything within five or more feet of the areas you intend to paint. In short, you should completely cover all windows, doors, decks, AC units. Additionally, remove any objects, such as plants, BBQ’s, lawn furniture, etc. from the immediate area. Rest assured, the time you will save by spraying, as opposed to brushing and rolling, will more than make up for the amount of extra labor you put into masking/prepping.

Second, you must back roll any and all trouble areas. The reason that spraying your home can save on material is that you can use less paint to cover most areas. Typically, a sprayer can achieve a better-looking coverage with less paint than a roller can. However, in problem areas—places with raw wood, areas where the paint has peeled, cracked wood, etc—back rolling is necessary (look for our tips on Back Rolling).

Finally, it is important to maintain the proper pressure of your spray paint stream. Essentially, you want to have the pressure (psi) going through the lines of your sprayer to be just enough to avoid uneven paint lines from appearing. Lines occur in your spray paint pattern and can leave visible lines in the finish. Moreover, with insufficient pressure, the spray does not cover as consistently. It is also important to avoid too high of a pressure (psi), as this will cause a greater amount of overspray, and waste paint.

If you are intimidated by the thought of renting an airless sprayer, don’t be. With care and patience, anyone can learn to use a Paint Spray Machine successfully.
